I bought the 504s as an upgrade from the 403s specifically for the easily replaceable gripper pads. I expected a learning curve going from a 3/16" slider to a 1/4" slider, but much to my surprise, I found the 504s to be *more* stable, and maybe even a touch slower than the 403s. My current theory is the way the slider is attached. The 403s have a noticeable curve as the teflon is bonded directly to the shoe. It's likely that the slider is never completely on the ice. The velcro on the 504s allows for some play between the teflon and the shoe. This appears to allow the teflon to lie flatter and more fully on the ice. When sliding while standing I can feel the outside edge of the shoe in a way I never could with the 403s, and that allows me to stand straighter and slide without falling to my pushing foot. The 504s might be a little slower due to more teflon touching the ice, but it is not a slow shoe. If anything, maybe the 403s were artificially fast... too much so. When I bought the 403s I fell, and fell, and fell. Sure, I was new to curling, but now with the 504s on my feet, it might just have been the shoes after all. If any new curlers ask me about shoes, I will steer them away from the 400 series to the 504. It's just better, even for beginners.
